MTHS Return to School Planning

Dear MTHS Community,

I hope you are enjoying your summer. Yesterday, the Illinois State Board of Education released guidance for schools for the 2020-21 school year.

This sixty page document will help provide a road map for returning to school this fall. This document covers several topics including a return to in-person learning, scheduling, transportation, wearing masks, social distancing and other measures intended to keep our students and staff safe and healthy. I am quite aware that there are strong feelings about the guidance provided by I.S.B.E. and the Illinois Department of Public Health. I am already receiving emails this morning about the document. I, and the Board of Education, welcome your feedback but would also encourage you to provide feedback to our policy makers at the state level including your local elected officials, the I.S.B.E., the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the Governor’s Office. I have attached both the I.S.B.E. planning document and the Governor’s Executive Order 2020-40 to this email for your review. Schools are in an interesting place as we try to digest ever changing guidance and directives. I.S.B.E notes in their document that the guidance they have provided is subject to change.

Today, I will be reviewing the document further and trying to digest the entirety of its guidance. The MTHS administration has already been in discussions with our Department Chairs and School Nurse about what school may look like in the fall and how we as administrators can best support our students, staff, and parents as we prepare for another unusual school year.  We will strive to take care of our students’ educational, physical, and social/emotional health needs to the best of our ability. Next week, I will be meeting with our feeder district administrators to discuss their reactions to the ISBE document and listen to their plans for a return to school and how we might be able to coordinate planning to help support parents who have children in multiple districts if possible.

I appreciate your patience, understanding, and flexibility as we work to process this new guidance and plan to welcome your children back into M.T.H.S.

I will be back in touch when we have more information to communicate.

Thank you,

Sean O’Laughlin
