Work Based/Education Programs

ICC Health Occupations is a one semester course that studies a wide variety of healthcare careers through classroom work, labs, job shadowing, and clinical experiences.  The course prepares students for the State of Illinois Nursing Assistant exam and work as a CNA. Students will receive 1 vocational credit which is equal to 2 CTE classes at MTHS and 7 credit hours at ICC. Classes run from 7am to 10am at the Eureka AC Home or ICC Peoria campus.  Students will return to MTHS for 4th hour at 10:45 am. Includes three ICC college courses: HLTH 112 Nursing Assistant Training (5 credit hours); HLTH 116 Alzheimer’s Disease (1 credit hour); ICC 104 Introduction to Health Careers (1 credit hour).  Students earning a C or better in HLTH 112 & HLTH 116 with completion of HLTH 041 qualify to take the Nursing Assistant State Exam to become certified. The cost for the program is approximately $800. This cost includes books and instructor fees. Note: Costs may vary slightly based on ICC’s fees. The fee will be applied to your child’s Skyward account and will be part of registration costs.  Additional costs may include scrubs, possible immunizations, and physical.  Must have one of the following Reading scores: NextGen Accuplacer 237 or higher; Writeplacer score of 3; ACT 18; SAT 480.  Applications are available outside of guidance. Deadline: February 1, 2023  for the 2023-2024 school year.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Fire Science Programs: Dual credits and cost vary depending on programs. The fee will be applied to students’ Skyward account and will be part of registration costs.  Costs vary depending on the amount of students enrolled in the program.  Cost ranges for the EMS combined with Fire Science are $1,200-1,500+.  Classes meet 7:15am-9:20am Monday-Friday.

 Illinois Central College: Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Fire Science Program:
Is an ICC Early College program in which high school seniors enroll in two certification courses, EMR, EMT, and two Fire Science courses. Students will attend classes at the FOLEPI building in East Peoria for this program. Students will also receive CPR training and certification. Program runs August 21, 2023–May 13, 2024 (ICC academic calendar). Classes meet 7:15 AM–9:20 AM, Monday-Friday.  Students are given the opportunity to become CPR certified personnel, licensed Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs), and licensed Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). They will also be introduced to the operations and services provided by today’s fire service professionals, earning 6 college credits toward the Fire Science Technology degree.  Students learn about emergency and fire services, giving them a head start on a career in public safety. They will earn credentials that can lead to employment after high school graduation and licensure, such as an EMT. They can also continue their education in Fire Science Technology, Emergency Medical Services, or a related field. Students must complete ICC student application and EMS/Fire Science application and participate in placement testing through ICC. Students must have a minimum Accuplacer reading score of 237, or a Writeplacer minimum score of 3. They can also qualify with a SAT reading score of 480 or ACT reading score of 18.  Credits earned:  EMS 112—Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) (2 college credits); FRSTK 110— Introduction to Fire Science (3college credits); EMS 114— Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) (8 college credits); FRSTK 113— Fire Company Apparatus & Procedure (3 college credits)

This program gives students the opportunity to become CPR certified personnel, licensed Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs), and licensed Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs).  Students learn about emergency services, giving them a head start on a career in emergency medical services and/or public safety. They will earn credentials that can lead to licensure and employment after high school graduation. Jobs could include working for an ambulance or fire/rescue agency as an EMT, or as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) in a hospital.  They can also continue in the Emergency Medical Services program at ICC to become a paramedic. Students choose one location: East Peoria Location— Folepi Building at 2200 E. Washington St., East Peoria, IL 61611 or ICC Pekin location—225 Hanna Drive, Pekin, IL 61554.  Students must complete ICC student application and EMS/Fire Science application and participate in placement testing through ICC. Construction WBL Program through Peoria PERFECT  http://www.perfectpeoria.com/  This competency-based Construction program exposes students to a variety of high-skill, high-wage construction industry careers. Students participate in specialized hands-on training, classroom instruction and internships at various locations, including apprenticeship schools and local construction job sites. Instruction includes a focus on safety and the skills necessary to succeed in various construction careers, from skilled trades to project management. No college credit.  Counts as 1 MTHS CTE Credit per semester. One-Year Program Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. OR Monday – Friday, 12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.. 1st Semester – Class held at various trade locations (Team building, OSHA 10-Hour certification, Explore 12 trades, challenge aptitude); 2nd Semester – Internships with contractors (survey student interests, placed with contractors, shadow project manager/site supervisor, learn first-hand skills at job site, practice career proficiency). COOPERATIVE VOCATIONAL EDUCATION (CO-OP) Year – 3.0 credits; Senior; Prerequisite: Sufficient credits as determined by Guidance Department.  Students must successfully complete the application process in order to be accepted into this program. This process includes an application form, parent authorization, faculty recommendations, an interview with the coordinator and attendance and discipline reports. This is a work experience program that is designed to develop employment competencies in students through both classroom instruction and a career related training station. Emphasis is placed on matching students with career related entry-level positions. Therefore, food service positions, unless managerial, are not acceptable training stations for this program. The classroom instruction portion of the program includes topics such as personal career development, job seeking skills and communication, and career exploration. This course will provide students with the knowledge, attitude, skills, and habits necessary to make the transition from school (high school/college) to the workplace successfully. Acceptance into this program and a specific job placement cannot be guaranteed. If the student does not have a job (approved by the coordinator) before the beginning of the school year, entrance into the CO-OP program will be denied. This course will also include a personal finance component that will count for the student’s Consumer Education requirement.

Caterpillar Program:

Caterpillar’s Student Trainee Program – NO ICC CREDIT

  • Caterpillar’s Student Trainee Program is a paid internship in the areas of Accounting, Clerical, Engineering and Information Technology.

  • During the summer, students work eight hours per day, 40 hours per week.

  • When school begins in the fall, the work schedule is adjusted to 15 to 20 hours per week. Students work half days and attend school half days.

  • Students earn one high school vocational credit per semester.

  • Assignments are made on the basis of the student’s interest, course of study and availability of openings.

  • Must be at least 16 yrs old and have a minimum GPA 2.8/4.0.

  • Application must be completed the prior school year.

  • Applications will be in the guidance office in the beginning of January and are due February TBA.
