ENGLISH II 126 – Written Composition

Year – .5 credit; Sophomore; Required Course for graduation (or honors)

Written Composition – This is a semester requirement for Sophomores who have satisfactorily completed English I. This writing-intensive course teaches a step-by-step procedure for developing a topic, organizing information and effectively putting the information into sentences and carefully constructed paragraphs. By the end of the semester students will be able to organize, develop and complete well-organized and coherent multi-paragraph essays of fact, reason, incident or example, and be able to effectively evaluate their own writing. A continuation of grammar improvement is also strongly emphasized, with the students being expected to show effective writing improvement through increased understanding of the basic composition/grammar skills. Students continue vocabulary work, and improving sentence variety. Expository writing (explanation/descriptive/narrative), comparison-contrast papers, and an elementary research unit will be covered. This course is the basis for the Writing Across the Curriculum instruction. Two novels or books will be read during this course.
