Skills USA

DESCRIPTION

Who may participate: Any MTHS Sophomore, Junior or Senior enrolled in CTE classes and that is academically eligible. Past students who have successfully competed at SkillsUSA have experience in an area within the CTE field, whether it be Graphic Arts, Electronics Technology, Photography,  Woodworking or something else.

What is SkillsUSA? SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry representatives working together to ensure America has a skilled work force.

It is a national, nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations and industries such as Graphic Communications. It was formerly known as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America).

Mission: SkillsUSA is an applied method of instruction for preparing America’s high performance workers enrolled in public career and technical programs. It provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. It builds and reinforces self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills. It emphasizes total quality at work—high ethical standards, superior work skills, life-long education, and pride in the dignity of work. SkillsUSA also promotes understanding of the free-enterprise system and involvement in community service.

At MTHS, our SkillsUSA group competes in a written test in areas of a student’s choosing. If students qualify for the state competition, the competition takes place in April in Peoria, Illinois.

How do I sign up? Sign ups begin in November with a deadline in January. See Mrs. Bohanan or Mr. Charron for more information about this.  Written Exams are held at MTHS in February. Students who qualify will attend the hands-on competition in Peoria in April. First place winners qualify to compete in Atlanta in mid-June.

Why Join? Participation in the state and national level SkillsUSA competition looks looks great on a resume and/or college application, plus, the competition experience is incredible!
